[experiment TWO: the monument] Developed Combination AXO in s/UP..

Above is the axometric drawing i chose to develop in sketchUP. Firstly, in sketchUP, i crudely combined both the models, basically laying them on top of each other. [next two images].

i then began to remould both monuments, developing the structure now as a whole. i also thought about the question where we need to provide an interesting way for the students to arrive + have come up with the idea that the large yellow rectangle is now a 'track' which will loop a mountain. attached to the track will be 'cars' for transportation. the cut up rectangle which runs along one side of the yellow rectangle, now also forms a tunnel, which will run through the mountain. the rest of the monument will be moulded within a plateau.

There are three areas for meetings in this initial design. the large space on the left, the red space + the white space to the front of the red one.

this image shows where the 'cars' will stop + people will enter the monument.

the above + below images show the monument from the rear + the waiting zone for the elevator. in the image below there is an upright rectangle made up of three parts. in the initial singular monuments this was a fixed rectangle but once again thinking about how people may interact with the monument, i want to propose that the central grey rectangle will move up + down between the floors.

this image shows the monument in the distance from the 'train station'. although once in the terrain, the monument will not be seen from the station, i wanted to include this image because i thought it captures + frames the monument well; it is almost as if you get the to see the whole before seeing each part upon arrival.

with this skin of my design now done, i want to focus on making the 'internal' spaces a little more defined + habitable, design of the 'cars', how people move between the floors where the elevator does not travel too + generally keep redefining the monument overall.

[experiment TWO: the monument] Axometrics Combined

Combination ONE

Combination TWO

Combination THREE

[This is the axometric combination i have decided to develop at this stage].

[experiment TWO: the monument] Developed models in new terrain.

Below are some images of the developed monuments in the terrain. when i bought the 'depth' monument into the terrain, some of its planes were missing. this also happened when i initially bought the 'undulating' monument in the first time. what i worked out caused this, was when in sketchup the shapes weren't created as solids. i fixed this on the 'undulating' monument and have included the crisper versions in this post.
with this terrain, i tried to use as much of the helder pinto tutorials to create the terrain as possible. unfortunatly the amount of detail in the terrain is not totally clear here but this week i used particles, entities, water volumes, roads/paths, slope in material application, imported the lighting file from the forest level. i want to add some fog to my scene also but am leaving this for the time being as i think the terrain will change with some feedback in studio this week.

[experiment TWO: the monument] second axo [surface porosity + depth] redesigned.

Whilst redesigning this monument, i was reminded of the studio discussion + the ideas of surface porosity as well as the depth this may allude to. this discussion lead more directly to this version of the monument. i tried to strip back all the rectangles, creating large, porous holes in each of the surfaces. by adding the yellow rectangle i am trying to portray 'depth' in the monument along with the 'tunnel' type rectangle near the top of the monument. that tunnel rectangular has also been textured towards being slightly translucent to reinforce the porous yet deep quality of that rectangle.

[experiment TWO: the monument] another axo developed in sketchup.

After putting the first two monuments into cE3, i could see what worked better in the environment and how they may be interacted with. from there i began to think about reworking some aspects of the designs of monuments. i went back to my original axometrics + whilst i was intially happy with the choices i made, i decided to develop another axometric to keep finding new ideas to perhaps replace or inspire changes in the othe rtwo as well.
Below is the original axometric for 'undulating' [frei otto], followed by the initial translation of that into sketchup. with the axo i was trying to imagine long, flat rectangular planes/states, bonded together by the central rectangle to create a stable state [per class discussion].

From these very basic beginnings, i began to think more about how the undulating form was to be represented per class discussion. 'static/stable states - tensile models as basis for creating aerodynamic undulating forms'. with this in mind i kept the basis of the design as an overall undulating series of platforms. but as an attempt at representing the rectangles as 5 separate static/stable states, i began to carve them out + interwove each rectangle further. so that each individual static rectangle bonded together to create a whole stable state. i also thought by allowing openings through the monument, it would continue the airflow around the monument and not stop it. i was trying to capture the essence of otto's undulating domes/stadia here whilst maintaining the rectangular shapes. the planes still undulate upwards in the developed design, encouraging seating at the varying planes as per the initial sketch. i would hope this may encourage the monument to be interacted with + perhaps be used as a meeting/ discussion point in a custom ce3 environment.
In the images below, i have quickly rendered them in sketchup using a custom texture + basic paint.

now to put into cE3.. stay tuned..

[experiment TWO: the monument] Still images of Monuments in the environment..

Below are some images i took from cE3 with my first draft monuments within their environment. Both models overhang the respective cliff they are perched on [although i want to rework the 'depth' monument + integrate it better with the terrain by placing the bottom of the wall on a rock face so the 'depth tunnels' may be walked into and the monument can be accessed more]. Both the models face each as they are outreached towards the other, as though they are having a permanent discussion, much like the B.E. students the monuments have been constructed for.

This is underneath the 'depth' monument. i used this texture underneath the model because i thought it represented depth well.. to me it represents the centre being further away so thought it related to the monument in that whilst the form represents depth as a whole, when standing underneath the monument this may not have been obvious which is why i wanted i used this texture here to create the feeling.
Here is an image of the second monument. it is an efficiency of space. to convey this i wanted to create a monument where all levels of it may be used.. here the top plain may be used as a platform + the underneath zone on the land is a sheltered area for gathering.. for future re-workings, i would like to perhaps make the rectangle that extends out a two level space, to convey a greater efficiency of space.

'the monumental valley face-off'..

[something i really want to find out, is how to get all the writing off the screen when im taking the still shots - it subtracts from the images so is something i want to fix on my developed posts]. [iv now found the answer to this + will remove for my next post {r_displayinfo 0} is the cE3 command].
