week one - progress in sketchUP..

This is an elevation of my model of a side view. the ground has been removed in the foreground of the image to show into the space. The space below the datum on the right hand side is studio A [word is entrap]. The other space below the datum is untouched as yet but this is where the connecting staircase will be for this level. Above this is the gallery space. And the above is studio B [word is suspend]. The gallery space is what is currently being worked on and what i am trying to achieve here is a blending of both the words. I am trying to make it look as though the gallery is both entrapped and suspended, which is why i continued the 'steel' from the 'suspend' studio + also wrapped it around the gallery..

This image shows the rear of my building, especially the offset window in the 'suspend' studio. i chose to offset the window to continue the dropped or suspended feeling of this studio.

This image shows the front of my building and the entrance. the below ground studio may be seen from here. the reasoning behind not covering the below studio with earth but leaving it seen stems from my interpretation of the word entrap.. i thought that when someone is entrapping somebody, the captor usually watches or keeps a close on the one the person being held captive. the central idea behind this studio was to create a space which allows people to peer into and constantly watch what was happening inside. i chose to submerge this studio in particular due the fact that i wanted to create a space where the artist was constantly feeling watched and surrounded by an endless darkness [the pit in which the studio will sit].

The three images below are some i captured earlier in the modelling process.. the first 2 show the entrance with 'entrap' studio below. the path acts as like a viewing platform for the studio. the third shows the studio from below, hanging in its place within the pit. the studio will be lit whilst the pit should be shadowy and dark, creating the illusion of a never-ending hole around the artist 'entrapped' in the studio. it also hangs in place away from the structure to enhance the feeling that this studio is alone and not part of of the whole.
